Because We Can

from Future History (2012) by Antillectual

/

about

This song and the original liner notes are from 2005. Its lyrics are, unfortunately, still up to date. With the economic crisis taking over politics, money for developmental aid is the first to fall victim to cutbacks. Despite the emerging markets in South America, Asia and Africa there are still plenty of people who could use a little help from their fellow, prospering earthlings. As long as wars, diseases and hunger have not been dealt with there is a responsibility for everyone. Because we have the material means and because we have the moral obligation to do so.
NB: ‘Aids’ still isn't the plural form of ‘aid’.

lyrics

Our tourist shades show us a dark view
A view of a world that needs our help
Instead of our so-called ‘development’

Take off those shades and see that there is a chance
Once they have something to lose
Something that they want to live for

We can't afford it
But we can avoid it

Our economy objects, we cannot afford their development
Well, neither can we afford to fail our moral responsibility

Because we can and we should
